"These newborn, uncomprehending male chicks are sorted from females and then either thrown alive into giant electric mincers or gassed in their thousands. It is a literal conveyor belt to death journeyed each year in Britain by 30 to 40 million animals, and all to bring the morning egg to our table.”

9 billion chickens are killed every year in America alone. 9 billion.

What’s it like to be a chicken on our planet?

Chicks are born in large incubators - they will never see their mothers. Shortly after birth, the males and females are separated. The females head to a life in the egg industry and the males are either tossed into trash bags to suffocate or ground up alive - that’s what you’re seeing in the second gif. In the third gif you can see the female chicks having the ends of their beaks cut off with a hot blade.

Five to 11 hens are crammed into tiny wire “battery” cages. The cages are often stacked on top of one another which allows urine and feces to fall down onto birds in the lower cages. Because of the terrible living conditions, chickens often die in their cages - sometimes left to rot in the same space with living birds (gif 4).

After about two years, those who have survived are sent to slaughter. At the slaughterhouse, laying hens meet the same bloody end as that of chickens raised for their meat. They are shackled and hung upside down, they are electrocuted, their throats are cut, and they are often scalded to death.
